Generally, creating steel from low-grade iron ore requires a long process of mining, crushing, separating, concentrating, mixing, pelletizing, and shipping. The process of mining low-grade iron ore, or taconite, requires massive resources. Heavy industrial mining equipment, expansive mines, and a skilled labor pool are all required. The equipment used includes diamond-bit rotary drills, hydraulic shovels and loaders, water wagons, production trucks and heavy-duty conveyors.

Electrostatic separator is one of iron ore processing equipment applied in iron ore fine beneficiation and concentration of minerals such as ilmenite, rutile, zircon, apatite, asbestos, haematite and potash. It is a method which utilises forces acting on charged or polarised bodies in an electric field to carry out mineral concentration. Different mineral particles, depending on their conductivity, will follow different paths in an electric field, making it possible to separate them. Some significant factors in this process include the mechanical and electrical characteristics of the separator and the size, form, specific gravity, surface condition and purity of the mineral particles.

Taconite is one type of raw iron ore materials, the crude taconite is delivered to large gyrator crushers, where chunks as large as five feet are reduced to six inches or less. More than 6,000 tons of taconite can be crushed in one hour. The crushed material is transferred by belt to an ore storage building, which holds up to 220,000 tons of taconite. The feeding machine sends the crushed iron ore to the concentrator building for grinding, separating, and concentrating.
